A detailed eighteenth-century Dutch engraving by Reinier Vinkeles featuring a portrait of the Cavallero accompanied by a bilingual New Year poem.
This print by the Dutch artist Reinier Vinkeles (I) presents a portrait of a figure known as the Cavallero, accompanied by a bilingual New Year greeting. The work combines a visual depiction of an elderly man with extensive text in both Spanish and Dutch. The portrait itself is executed with precise, controlled lines, typical of the late eighteenth-century Dutch engraving tradition. The subject wears a wide-brimmed hat and a simple cloak, his expression conveying a sense of weary dignity.
The text serves as a satirical or perhaps mendicant poem, common in the period for street performers or beggars to distribute during the festive season. The Spanish verses on the left describe the poverty and physical decline of the Cavallero, while the Dutch verses on the right offer a more formal New Year wish to the reader, referencing the trade and prosperity of Amsterdam. The juxtaposition of the somber portrait with the lighthearted, albeit slightly melancholic, verses provides a glimpse into the social customs of the era.
Vinkeles was a prolific draughtsman and engraver, known for his ability to capture both the likeness of his subjects and the surrounding atmosphere of his time. This piece demonstrates his technical proficiency in handling the burin to create varied textures, from the soft shading of the face to the crisp lettering of the poem. The composition is balanced, with the portrait placed centrally at the top, allowing the text to occupy the lower portion of the sheet. This format was popular for broadsides and ephemeral prints intended for public circulation. The work remains a curious example of how visual art and literature were integrated in eighteenth-century Dutch print culture to convey social commentary and seasonal greetings.
