A refined lithographic portrait of the French Romantic painter Théodore Géricault, captured by his contemporary Léon Cogniet.
This lithographic portrait depicts the French painter Théodore Géricault, a figure associated with the early Romantic movement. Executed by his contemporary Léon Cogniet, the work captures the subject in a three-quarter view, wearing a soft cap. The artist employs a delicate application of graphite-like tones, typical of the lithographic medium during the early nineteenth century, to model the facial features and the texture of the hair.
Cogniet, a student of Pierre-Narcisse Guérin, was well-acquainted with the artistic circles of Paris. His approach to portraiture here is direct and unadorned. The focus remains entirely on the physiognomy of Géricault, whose gaze is directed towards the viewer with a sense of quiet intensity. The background is left largely empty, allowing the soft shading around the shoulders and neck to provide a subtle transition from the figure to the paper surface.
Technically, the print demonstrates the capabilities of lithography to replicate the nuances of drawing. The cross-hatching and stippling techniques used to define the shadows under the chin and the contours of the face reveal a high degree of control over the stone. This portrait provides a visual record of Géricault, who died prematurely in 1824, shortly after this period. It offers a glimpse into the personal appearance of an artist whose work, such as The Raft of the Medusa, altered the trajectory of French painting. The print is a study in character, stripped of the grandiosity often found in the formal oil portraits of the era, presenting instead a more intimate view of a fellow practitioner.
