A fine eighteenth-century etching by Giovanni Cattini, depicting the Venetian painter Pietro Longhi within a classical oval frame.
This print by Giovanni Cattini depicts the Venetian painter Pietro Longhi. The composition follows the tradition of the trompe-l'oeil portrait, where the subject is presented within a simulated stone oval frame resting upon a pedestal. This framing device creates a sense of physical presence, drawing the viewer into the space occupied by the sitter. Longhi is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing a wig and a simple, draped garment that reflects the fashion of the mid-eighteenth century. His expression is calm and direct, capturing the observational quality often associated with his own genre paintings of Venetian life.
Cattini, a skilled printmaker, employs precise line work to render the textures of the wig, the fabric, and the stone architecture. The shading within the oval provides a soft, atmospheric depth, contrasting with the crisp lettering on the pedestal base. The inscription, 'Petrus Longhi Pictor Venetus', identifies the subject, while the credit 'Joh. Cattini incidit' confirms the engraver. The work is based on an original painting by Antonio Nogari, a contemporary of Longhi. This print serves as a record of the artistic circles in Venice during the eighteenth century, documenting the appearance of a man who chronicled the social customs of his city. The technical execution demonstrates the high standard of reproductive printmaking in Italy during this period, where the engraver sought to translate the tonal qualities of oil paint into the monochromatic language of ink on paper. The balance between the portrait and the architectural base provides a formal, dignified presentation of the artist.
