A precise 1645 etching by Wenceslaus Hollar, reproducing Albrecht Dürer's 1498 self-portrait with technical mastery.
This etching by Wenceslaus Hollar, dated 1645, is a reproduction of Albrecht Dürer's famous 1498 self-portrait. Hollar, a Bohemian printmaker who spent much of his career in England, was highly regarded for his technical precision and his ability to translate the qualities of paintings into the medium of etching. In this work, he captures the youthful, confident gaze of Dürer, who is depicted in his characteristic fashionable attire of the late fifteenth century.
The composition follows the original painting closely, showing Dürer positioned behind a stone ledge. His long, flowing hair and the specific folds of his tunic are rendered with meticulous attention to line and texture. Hollar includes the original date and Dürer's monogram on the wall, while adding his own inscriptions at the bottom. These inscriptions, which include the location of the work within the Arundel collection, provide context for the print's provenance during the seventeenth century.
Hollar's approach to this print demonstrates his skill in replicating the tonal variations of the original oil painting through cross-hatching and varied line weights. The background, featuring a distant mountain view through a window, is handled with a delicacy that balances the foreground figure. This print serves as a record of the Dürer painting as it appeared in the mid-seventeenth century, reflecting the interest of collectors like the Earl of Arundel in preserving and circulating the works of earlier masters. The clarity of the lines and the balanced composition make this an excellent example of Hollar's technical proficiency in the etching process.
