A refined 1628 portrait by David Bailly, capturing a young woman in traditional Dutch Golden Age attire with a detailed lace ruff and pearl jewellery.
This portrait, dated 1628, exemplifies the technical precision characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age. David Bailly, a Leiden-based artist, captures his subject with a focus on material texture and social status. The sitter is depicted in a formal pose, wearing a large, pleated ruff collar that frames her face. The lace trim of the ruff is rendered with fine brushwork, showing the delicate patterns of the fabric against the dark background.
Her attire includes a dark bodice with gold-embroidered panels and a string of pearls draped across her chest. A small, ornate brooch is pinned to her dress, adding a touch of colour to the otherwise sombre palette. The lighting is controlled, directed from the upper left to model the features of the face and the volume of the ruff. This method of illumination creates a sense of presence, drawing the viewer to the subject's direct gaze.
Bailly was known for his ability to balance individual characterisation with the rigid fashion requirements of the seventeenth-century Dutch elite. The painting reflects the period's interest in the display of wealth through clothing and jewellery. The dark, neutral background ensures that the focus remains entirely on the sitter, whose expression is calm and composed. The work demonstrates the artist's skill in handling oil paint to replicate the sheen of pearls, the stiffness of starched linen, and the weight of heavy textiles. It is a representative example of the portraiture produced in Leiden during the early seventeenth century, documenting the aesthetic preferences of the merchant class.
