A refined 1928 sanguine portrait by Russian artist Alexandre Iacovleff, capturing a contemplative subject with precise anatomical detail and warm, tonal depth.
Alexandre Iacovleff, a Russian artist known for his technical precision and mastery of drawing, produced this portrait in 1928. The work utilises sanguine, a red chalk medium that allows for subtle tonal gradations and a warm, monochromatic finish. Iacovleff was trained at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, where he developed a rigorous approach to anatomy and form. His style often draws upon classical traditions, favouring clear lines and balanced compositions over the abstraction prevalent in much of the early twentieth-century art scene.
The subject is depicted in a contemplative pose, with her hand resting against her cheek. This gesture creates a sense of intimacy and quietude. Iacovleff employs delicate hatching to model the contours of the face and the folds of the clothing, demonstrating his ability to capture volume through light and shadow. The background remains largely unworked, which directs the viewer's attention to the expression and the physical presence of the sitter. The artist's signature and the date are visible in the lower right corner, executed with the same confident hand seen throughout the drawing.
Iacovleff travelled extensively during his career, including significant expeditions to East Asia and Africa. These experiences informed his later work, yet his portraiture remained grounded in a European academic sensibility. This piece reflects his focus on the human subject, rendered with a sensitivity to texture and character. The use of sanguine provides a timeless quality, reminiscent of Old Master drawings, while the subject's features and attire place the work firmly within the interwar period. It is a study of poise and individual character, presented with the clarity and discipline that defined Iacovleff's professional output.
