A 18th-century Cusco School painting depicting the Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Bethlehem, featuring an indigenous donor in prayer.
This painting belongs to the Cusco School, a tradition of religious art that flourished in the Viceroyalty of Peru during the colonial period. The work depicts the Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Bethlehem, a specific iconographic representation popularised in the Andean region. The Virgin is shown in a triangular, mountain-like form, a stylistic choice that often conflated the figure of the Madonna with the sacred Andean earth deity, Pachamama.
The Virgin wears an elaborate, gold-brocaded mantle that dominates the composition. She holds the Christ Child, who is positioned centrally within her robes. Two putti hover in the upper corners, holding ribbons inscribed with devotional Latin and Spanish text. The lower section of the canvas features a portrait of an indigenous donor, shown in profile with hands clasped in prayer. This inclusion of a donor figure is a common feature in colonial Andean art, reflecting the social status and religious devotion of the local nobility or elite.
The background is a muted, atmospheric blue, which contrasts with the heavy gilding and deep red tones of the Virgin's vestments. The base of the image includes a decorative altar-like structure adorned with floral arrangements, adding to the ceremonial nature of the scene. The painting displays the characteristic flatness and decorative focus of the Cusco School, where the emphasis is placed on the symbolic power of the icon rather than naturalistic perspective. The fine details of the gold leaf application and the precise rendering of the donor's features provide insight into the technical skill of the anonymous artist working within this regional workshop tradition.
