A delicate Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, depicting a woman and child in a scene from his series on the poet Ono no Komachi.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu belongs to the series 'The Seven Fashionable Aspects of Komachi' (Furyu yatsushi nana Komachi). Harunobu was a pioneer of 'nishiki-e', or brocade prints, which introduced full-colour printing to the Ukiyo-e tradition. This work depicts the legendary ninth-century poet Ono no Komachi, reimagined in the contemporary setting of the Edo period.
The composition features a woman carrying a bucket on her head, accompanied by a small child. Harunobu employs his characteristic slender, graceful figures, often described as doll-like in their proportions. The palette remains restrained, utilising soft greens, muted oranges, and earthy tones typical of his mid-career output. The inclusion of a cartouche containing a poem and a small landscape sketch provides a narrative layer, connecting the visual imagery to classical Japanese literature.
Harunobu's work is noted for its focus on domestic scenes and the lives of women, moving away from the theatrical subjects common in earlier Ukiyo-e. The line work is delicate, defining the contours of the figures and the folds of their garments with precision. The background is kept minimal, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the two figures. This print exemplifies the technical refinement achieved during the development of multi-block printing in Japan, where the registration of multiple colours allowed for greater artistic expression. The print captures a quiet, everyday moment, elevated by the artist's attention to detail and balance.
