A detailed nineteenth-century lithographic cover design featuring allegorical figures and architectural scenes of Amsterdam.
This lithographic cover design by Johan Coenraad Leich serves as the frontispiece for a historical study regarding the etymology of Amsterdam's geography. The composition is divided into distinct visual zones, characteristic of nineteenth-century book design. On the right, a cloud-like formation acts as a vehicle for personification: various figures represent different streets, canals, and districts of the city, each identified by a small placard. This allegorical assembly captures the spirit of the city by blending human figures with the urban topography of the Dutch capital.
Below this celestial gathering, a grounded scene depicts a harbour area, featuring a prominent round tower and bustling activity along the waterfront. The inclusion of ships and figures in period dress provides a sense of scale and historical context. To the left, a small, oval vignette offers a serene view of the city's waterways, framed by decorative elements that contrast with the busier scenes on the right. The use of a muted, monochromatic background allows the subtle hand-coloured details to emerge, drawing the eye to the specific labels and architectural features.
Leich, a Dutch artist active in the mid-nineteenth century, demonstrates a clear command of lithographic technique here. The work functions as both a functional cover and a narrative summary of the book's contents. It invites the viewer to decode the relationship between the city's physical infrastructure and its historical nomenclature. The print is a fine example of how nineteenth-century publishers utilised graphic design to communicate the scope of academic texts to potential readers. Its balanced arrangement of text and image reflects the period's interest in both systematic classification and romanticised urban representation.
