A striking example of Lyrical Abstraction by Zao Wou-Ki, featuring fluid, calligraphic marks and a moody, atmospheric colour palette.
Zao Wou-Ki, a central figure in the development of Lyrical Abstraction, bridged the gap between traditional Chinese ink painting and Western modernism. This work, titled Nocturne, demonstrates his characteristic approach to space and light. The composition avoids rigid structure, opting instead for a fluid arrangement of marks that suggest atmospheric depth.
In this piece, Zao employs a dark, moody palette, punctuated by flashes of crimson and soft, ethereal light. The application of paint appears layered, with fine, etched-like lines intersecting with broader, gestural strokes. These marks evoke the calligraphic traditions of his Chinese heritage, yet they are applied with the freedom of European abstract painting. The result is a visual experience that feels both expansive and contained, as if the viewer is observing a celestial event or a shifting, nocturnal environment.
Zao moved to Paris in 1948, where he encountered the work of Paul Klee and other European modernists. This exposure shifted his practice away from figurative representation toward the exploration of pure energy and light. His work often avoids specific narrative, preferring to invite the viewer into a space of contemplation. The interplay between the dense, dark background and the lighter, more active foreground elements creates a sense of movement that is typical of his mid-career output. By balancing controlled technique with spontaneous expression, Zao creates a work that feels both ancient and contemporary. This print captures the essence of his ability to translate internal states into visual form, offering a quiet, meditative addition to any collection.
