A detailed 16th-century engraving by Philips Galle depicting the biblical scene of Noah offering a sacrifice after the Great Flood.
This engraving by Philips Galle depicts the biblical narrative of Noah offering a sacrifice following the recession of the Great Flood. The composition is structured around the central act of devotion, with Noah and his family kneeling before an altar from which smoke rises towards the heavens. Galle employs a characteristic Northern Renaissance approach, blending precise line work with an imaginative, almost surreal, architectural setting.
In the background, the Ark rests atop a mountain, while a rainbow arches across the sky, symbolising the covenant between God and humanity. The scene is populated with classical ruins and architectural fragments, which contrast with the primitive nature of the sacrificial altar. The inclusion of these ruins suggests a temporal displacement, a common device in sixteenth-century printmaking to bridge the gap between ancient biblical events and the contemporary viewer.
Technically, the work demonstrates the mastery of the burin, with fine hatching used to create volume in the figures and texture in the stone structures. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Prima Noe imponit pingues holocausta per aras', provides the narrative context, identifying the moment as the first burnt offering made by Noah. The figures are rendered with a sense of dramatic gesture, their arms raised in supplication. The surrounding landscape, though cluttered with debris and remnants of the flood, maintains a clear spatial hierarchy. This print reflects the period's fascination with biblical history and the technical capabilities of the Antwerp school of printmakers, who were instrumental in the dissemination of religious and moralising imagery throughout Europe. The work remains a fine example of the narrative clarity and technical discipline associated with Galle's extensive output as both an engraver and a publisher.
