Alida Withoos was a notable Dutch botanical artist, active during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. She belonged to a family of painters and received training from her father, Matthias Withoos. Her work is recognised for its precision and scientific observation, often commissioned by wealthy patrons to document rare specimens in their private gardens or the Amsterdam Botanical Garden.
This study of Nandina displays the artist's technical control over the watercolour medium. The composition is balanced, allowing the viewer to observe the plant's structure, from the serrated edges of the leaves to the delicate clusters of berries and small flowers.
