Beschreibung
A striking marine study by Alfred Wallis, capturing a motor vessel navigating a steep wave through simplified forms and raw, expressive brushwork.
Alfred Wallis, a former Cornish fisherman and scrap merchant, began painting in his late sixties. He lacked formal training, yet his work possesses a directness that attracted the attention of Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood in 1928. This piece, Motor Vessel Mounting a Wave, captures the essence of his maritime experience. Wallis often utilised discarded materials, such as cardboard boxes or scraps of wood, which dictated the scale and shape of his compositions.
The image depicts a vessel navigating a steep, grey swell. The perspective is flattened, a common trait in his work where the artist prioritised the relative importance of objects over realistic spatial depth. The ship is rendered with simple, linear strokes, showing the masts and superstructure against a stark, neutral background. The wave itself is a solid mass of grey, applied with a heavy hand, contrasting with the lighter, more delicate pencil work used for the rigging and details of the boat.
Wallis did not seek to replicate the appearance of the sea through traditional techniques. Instead, he relied on memory and his internal understanding of how a ship behaves in rough water. The lack of a horizon line or complex atmospheric effects forces the viewer to focus on the immediate action of the vessel. His work is often categorised as naive or primitive, yet it demonstrates a sophisticated grasp of composition and narrative economy. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Wallis conveys the physical struggle between the machine and the ocean. This print preserves the texture of the original cardboard support, maintaining the raw, honest quality that defined his output during his years in St Ives.
