A detailed engraving by Luigi Calamatta depicting the death mask of Napoleon Bonaparte, rendered with Neoclassical precision and symbolic military motifs.
This engraving by Luigi Calamatta depicts the death mask of Napoleon Bonaparte. Calamatta, an Italian engraver, based this work on the original plaster cast taken by Dr. Francesco Antommarchi on Saint Helena shortly after the former emperor's death in 1821. The composition presents the mask in a solemn, frontal view, crowned with a laurel wreath, which evokes the classical imagery of Roman emperors.
Below the mask, the artist includes symbolic objects: a sword hilt and the insignia of the Legion of Honour. These elements rest upon a plinth inscribed with the name NAPOLEONE. The surrounding border features subtle, embossed-style motifs, including an eagle, a comet, and various heraldic animals, which frame the central image with a sense of formal order.
Calamatta was known for his technical precision in the medium of line engraving. He captures the stillness of the subject through a controlled use of light and shadow, creating a smooth, sculptural quality in the rendering of the facial features. The contrast between the dark, recessed background and the illuminated mask draws the viewer's attention to the specific contours of the face. This print serves as a historical record of the physical likeness of Napoleon, filtered through the aesthetic conventions of the early nineteenth century. The work reflects the period's fascination with the iconography of the Napoleonic era, presenting the subject with a gravity that aligns with the Neoclassical style. The inclusion of the artist's credit at the bottom confirms the source of the plaster cast, linking the print directly to the medical documentation of the event.
