A serene eighteenth-century Dutch drawing featuring a figure towing a barge along a riverbank, rendered in pen and brown ink with wash.
Abraham Rutgers, a Dutch artist active during the eighteenth century, produced this study of a river scene. The work captures a quiet moment along a waterway, where a figure pulls a barge towrope from the bank. The composition relies on a horizontal orientation, typical of Dutch topographical sketches from this period, which prioritises the expansive sky and the reflective quality of the water.
Rutgers employs pen and brown ink to define the forms, using varied hatching to suggest the texture of the trees and the grassy bank. The application of brown wash provides depth, creating soft transitions between the light-filled sky and the darker, shadowed areas near the water's edge. The figure on the left serves as a point of human interest, providing scale against the rural backdrop of farm buildings and dense rows of trees.
This drawing reflects the interest in local geography and daily labour that characterised much of the Dutch graphic tradition. The artist avoids excessive detail, focusing instead on the atmospheric conditions and the rhythmic repetition of the tree lines. The use of a monochromatic palette allows the viewer to focus on the draughtsmanship and the subtle interplay of light across the scene. Such works were often produced as independent studies or as part of larger collections documenting the Dutch countryside. The simplicity of the medium, combined with the careful observation of the environment, results in a composition that feels both immediate and timeless. It offers a glimpse into the quiet, agrarian life of the era, presented with a restraint that is characteristic of the artist's approach to his subject matter.
