A detailed Baroque etching by Francesco Faraone Aquila, after a design by Carlo Maratta, depicting the Virgin and Child with saints.
This etching and engraving by Francesco Faraone Aquila depicts a traditional religious scene: the Virgin Mary seated upon clouds, holding the Christ Child. They are accompanied by two saints, one of whom appears to be Saint Ambrose, identified by his bishop's vestments and mitre. The composition is based on an original design by the painter Carlo Maratta, whose name is inscribed at the bottom of the plate as the inventor of the image.
The work displays the technical precision characteristic of late seventeenth and early eighteenth-century Italian printmaking. Aquila employs a variety of line weights to define the forms: fine, parallel hatching creates the soft texture of the clouds, while deeper, more decisive strokes model the heavy folds of the saints' robes and the musculature of the figures. The arrangement of the figures follows a triangular structure, a common device in Baroque art to guide the viewer's eye through the narrative. The presence of a putto at the base of the composition adds a sense of movement and lightness, contrasting with the more static, reverent postures of the saints.
Francesco Faraone Aquila was a prolific printmaker in Rome, known for reproducing the works of contemporary painters for a wider audience. This print serves as a record of Maratta's compositional style, capturing the dramatic lighting and emotional gravity typical of the Roman Baroque period. The inclusion of the publisher's address, 'Si Vendono in Parione da Matteo Giudice', indicates that this print was produced for commercial distribution in the Roman art market. The work remains a clear example of the collaborative relationship between painters and engravers during this era, where the printmaker acted as a conduit for the dissemination of religious iconography.
