Konstantin Somov, a founding member of the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) group, produced this work during a period of intense interest in Russian folklore and romantic literature. The composition draws directly from Alexander Pushkin's narrative poem, 'Ruslan and Ludmila'. It depicts the captive princess Ludmila within the magical, otherworldly garden of the sorcerer Chernomor.

Somov employs a dreamlike, almost hallucinatory aesthetic that characterises his early output. The scene is populated by figures that appear to emerge from the dense, dark foliage. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, deep greens, and muted ochres, which contribute to the sense of enclosure and mystery. The central figure of Ludmila is rendered with a pale, ethereal quality, contrasting with the more shadowy, ambiguous forms surrounding her. This stylistic choice emphasises the psychological isolation of the character within the sorcerer's domain.

The work reflects the broader Symbolist movement's preoccupation with themes of enchantment, melancholy, and the subconscious. Somov avoids clear, linear narrative in favour of a mood-driven interpretation of the text. The brushwork is fluid and somewhat gestural, allowing the forms to dissolve into the background, which heightens the sense of a fleeting, phantasmagorical vision. By focusing on the atmosphere of the garden rather than the specific action of the poem, Somov invites the viewer to engage with the emotional weight of the scene. This piece is representative of the artist's ability to blend historical literary themes with a personal, highly stylised visual language that was characteristic of the Russian Silver Age.
