A delicate study of lotus flowers by the Qing Dynasty master Yun Shouping, executed in the traditional boneless ink and colour technique.
Yun Shouping, also known as Nantian, was a central figure in the Orthodox school of Qing Dynasty painting. He is particularly recognised for his revival of the 'boneless' (mogu) technique, a method of painting that eschews traditional ink outlines in favour of direct colour application. This approach allows for a soft, atmospheric quality that captures the ephemeral nature of his subjects.
In this work, the lotus flowers are rendered with a delicate touch. The artist uses subtle gradations of ink and pigment to suggest the weight of the leaves and the translucency of the petals. The composition is balanced, with the vertical stems providing a sense of structure against the broader, rounded forms of the foliage. The negative space surrounding the plants creates a quiet, contemplative mood, typical of the literati tradition where the artist seeks to express the inner spirit of the subject rather than a mere physical likeness.
The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper left corner is an integral component of the work. It provides a poetic context, linking the visual imagery to the cultural and philosophical traditions of the period. The ink wash technique creates a sense of depth without relying on Western perspective, instead using the varying density of the ink to create a layered effect. The muted palette, dominated by soft greens, earthy browns, and pale pinks, reflects the artist's focus on natural harmony and restraint. This piece demonstrates the technical precision and aesthetic sensitivity that defined Yun Shouping's career, offering a window into the refined artistic practices of seventeenth-century China.
