This engraving by Philips Galle depicts a scene from the Book of Genesis, specifically the narrative of Lot and his daughters following the destruction of Sodom. The composition is divided into two distinct zones. In the foreground, the figures are positioned within a rocky, cavernous setting. To the left, Lot is shown in an embrace with one of his daughters, while another figure rests in a state of despair or exhaustion on the right. The artist employs a high degree of detail in the rendering of the gnarled tree roots and the craggy rock formations, which frame the human subjects.
Beyond the immediate foreground, the scene opens into a vast, desolate vista filled with architectural ruins. These structures, reminiscent of Roman antiquities, suggest a classical influence common in Northern Mannerist printmaking. The inclusion of these ruins serves to establish a sense of historical distance and moral decay, reflecting the thematic weight of the biblical narrative. The background features a sprawling, hilly terrain that recedes into the distance, providing a sense of scale that contrasts with the intimate, albeit troubled, scene in the cave.
Philips Galle was a prolific engraver and publisher based in Antwerp. His work often involved the reproduction of designs by other artists, such as Maerten van Heemskerck, whose name appears on the stone block within the print.
