A detailed architectural study of a street in Lisieux, rendered in graphite and watercolour by British artist Henry Edridge.
Henry Edridge, a British artist known for his precise draughtsmanship, captured this view of Lisieux during his travels in France. The work demonstrates his ability to combine architectural accuracy with a light, atmospheric touch. Edridge often utilised a combination of graphite and subtle watercolour washes to define the timber-framed buildings that characterise the historic streets of Normandy.
The composition draws the eye down the narrow street, where the vertical lines of the medieval structures converge toward the distant cathedral spire. Edridge pays close attention to the texture of the buildings, using delicate ink lines to suggest the weathered wood and stone. The scene is populated by small, gestural figures that provide a sense of scale and daily activity, reflecting the artist's interest in the social life of the towns he visited.
This piece is typical of the topographical studies produced by British artists in the early nineteenth century. Edridge avoids heavy saturation, preferring a muted palette that allows the structural details to remain the primary focus. The inclusion of laundry hanging between the buildings adds a domestic, lived-in quality to the urban scene. His technique relies on a balance between the structural rigidity of the architecture and the fluid, transparent application of pigment. This print captures the quiet observation and technical discipline that defined Edridge's later career, offering a glimpse into the appearance of French provincial towns before the industrial changes of the mid-nineteenth century.
