A Post-Impressionist still life by Meijer de Haan, featuring a glass of lilacs, an apple, and a lemon rendered with textured, broken brushstrokes.
Meijer de Haan, a Dutch painter who spent significant time in Brittany, produced this still life during his period of association with the Pont-Aven School. The composition features a glass vase containing a cluster of lilacs, positioned alongside a dark lemon and a red apple. The artist employs a technique characterised by short, broken brushstrokes, which creates a textured surface across the canvas. This approach reflects the influence of contemporary French painting, particularly the experiments with colour and light that defined the late nineteenth-century avant-garde.
The background is rendered in a light, dappled manner, providing a neutral field that allows the deeper tones of the foliage and the fruit to emerge. The glass vase is depicted with a degree of abstraction, its form suggested through light and shadow rather than rigid outlines. The contrast between the cool, violet hues of the flowers and the warm, saturated red of the apple provides a visual balance to the arrangement. De Haan focuses on the materiality of the objects, using paint to suggest the weight of the fruit and the delicate structure of the blossoms.
This work demonstrates the artist's interest in the decorative potential of the still life genre. By simplifying the forms and focusing on the interplay of light across the surfaces, de Haan moves away from traditional academic representation. The painting captures a quiet, domestic moment, yet the application of paint remains energetic and deliberate. It is a representative example of the stylistic shifts occurring within European art at the time, as painters moved toward more subjective interpretations of their subjects. The work remains a study in colour relationships and the arrangement of everyday objects within a confined space.
