A satirical 1840 lithograph by Charles Vernier depicting a social encounter between two aristocratic women and a soldier in mid-nineteenth-century France.
This lithograph is part of the series Les Français croqués par eux-mêmes, a satirical publication that documented the social tensions and shifting class identities in mid-nineteenth-century France. Charles Vernier, a prolific illustrator for the Parisian press, captures a brief, biting exchange between two women of the aristocracy and a soldier standing guard. The dialogue, printed below the image, highlights the friction between the old nobility and the new order of the citizen-soldier. The women mock the soldier's appearance, calling him ugly, while he attempts to maintain a formal, respectful posture. The retort from the women suggests that neither the title of citizen nor soldier suits him, reflecting the disdain held by the upper classes toward the changing social hierarchy of the era.
Vernier employs a clean, precise line quality characteristic of the lithographic medium popularised in the 1840s. The composition is structured to focus on the interaction, with the two women positioned on the left and the soldier on the right, creating a clear visual divide that mirrors their social separation. The background is minimal, allowing the viewer to focus on the costumes and the expressions of the figures. The women are depicted in the elaborate fashion of the period, with heavy cloaks and bonnets, while the soldier wears a standard-issue uniform. This work serves as a record of the visual culture and political climate of the July Monarchy. It demonstrates how caricature functioned as a tool for social commentary, using humour to address the anxieties surrounding the democratisation of French society. The print is a fine example of the satirical graphic arts that flourished in Paris during this period, providing a window into the daily life and social attitudes of the time.
