Beschreibung

A 1888 Post-Impressionist oil painting by Paul Gauguin, depicting the autumn foliage and ancient stone paths of Les Alyscamps in Arles.

Painted in 1888, this work captures the ancient Roman necropolis of Les Alyscamps in Arles. Paul Gauguin produced this piece during his brief, volatile period working alongside Vincent van Gogh in the south of France. The composition focuses on the path winding through the site, framed by trees that display the fiery hues of autumn.

Gauguin employs a distinct approach to colour and form here. Rather than adhering to the optical realism favoured by the Impressionists, he uses saturated oranges, deep reds, and cool blues to construct a scene that prioritises emotional resonance over literal accuracy. The brushwork is deliberate, with visible strokes that build texture across the canvas. The architectural elements, including the stone structures and the arched gateway, are rendered with simplified shapes, reflecting the artist's move toward Synthetism.

This period in Arles was a time of intense experimentation for Gauguin. He sought to move away from the descriptive nature of his earlier work, opting instead for a more subjective interpretation of his surroundings. The contrast between the warm, autumnal foliage and the shadowed, cooler tones of the path and stone walls creates a sense of stillness. The painting serves as a record of the specific light and atmosphere of the Provençal autumn, filtered through the artist's developing aesthetic theories. By flattening the space and emphasising the decorative qualities of the trees, Gauguin signals his departure from traditional perspective. This work remains a clear example of his transition toward the symbolic and non-naturalistic style that would define his later career in Tahiti.

Artist Biography

Paul Gauguin

Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) was a leading French Post-Impressionist artist whose bold experiments in colour and form synthesised a new, modern style. Though born in Paris, Gauguin spent his early childhood in Peru, an experience that instilled in him a lifelong wanderlust and a fascination with the exotic. He began his career as a stockbroker, only turning to art in his late twenties after being inspired by the Impressionists.

Gauguin soon rejected the Impressionist focus on objective representation, seeking instead to express subjective emotions and spiritual ideas through his art. This led him to develop a distinctive style characterised by flattened forms, simplified lines, and vibrant, non-naturalistic colours. Key works such as *Vision after the Sermon* (1888) exemplify this approach, showcasing his move towards Symbolism and Cloisonnism.

Frustrated with European society, Gauguin sought refuge in French Polynesia, where he created some of his most iconic paintings, including *Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?* (1897-98). These works depict the beauty and mystery of Tahitian life, albeit through a lens that has since been critiqued for its romanticised and colonial gaze. Despite his controversial legacy, Paul Gauguin's innovative use of colour and his exploration of primal themes profoundly influenced the development of modern art.
