A classical Baroque scene by Domenichino, depicting the biblical narrative of Tobias and the Archangel Raphael within a serene, structured river setting.
Domenico Zampieri, known as Domenichino, was a prominent figure of the Bolognese School. This work, painted on copper, demonstrates his mastery of the classical tradition. The scene depicts a narrative from the Book of Tobit, where the Archangel Raphael instructs Tobias to capture a fish from the River Tigris. The creature's organs are later used to heal his father's blindness.
The composition follows the principles of the idealised classical mode. Tall, framing trees on either side of the canvas draw the eye toward the middle distance, where a winding river leads the viewer through a serene, open valley. The figures are placed in the foreground, yet they remain subordinate to the broader environmental setting. Domenichino employs a balanced arrangement of light and shadow, which creates a sense of calm and order. The distant hills, rendered in soft, atmospheric blues, provide a sense of depth that is characteristic of his approach to spatial construction.
Unlike the more dramatic or turbulent works of his contemporaries, this painting prioritises clarity and harmony. The figures are rendered with precise detail, reflecting the artist's training under Annibale Carracci. The use of copper as a support allows for a smooth, enamel-like finish, which preserves the luminosity of the pigments over centuries. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, greens, and the muted blues of the sky, which unify the natural elements with the biblical narrative. This work is a fine example of how seventeenth-century painters integrated human stories into carefully structured, natural environments, creating a sense of timelessness that defines the classical Baroque style.
