A detailed 1542 etching by Master D. C. M. depicting a forest stream and waterfall, rendered with precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques.
This etching by the artist known as Master D. C. M. dates to 1542. It depicts a dense, wooded scene dominated by coniferous trees and a rushing stream that cascades over rocks in the foreground. The artist employs a rigorous system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the textures of the bark, the mossy boulders, and the turbulent movement of the water.
In the middle distance, three small figures traverse a bridge, providing a sense of scale against the towering forest. The composition relies on a traditional Northern Renaissance approach to nature, where the environment is rendered with a focus on descriptive detail rather than atmospheric perspective. The sky is indicated by horizontal lines, which contrast with the varied, directional strokes used to model the foliage and the terrain.
Master D. C. M. remains an enigmatic figure within the history of printmaking, identified primarily by the monogram visible in the upper right corner of the plate. This work reflects the period interest in the depiction of wild, untamed nature, a theme that gained traction among printmakers in the sixteenth century. The precision of the line work suggests a high degree of technical proficiency, typical of the small-scale etchings produced for collectors and connoisseurs of the era. The print captures a specific moment of observation, balancing the chaotic energy of the waterfall with the structured, rhythmic patterns of the surrounding woodland. It is a representative example of the graphic arts from the mid-sixteenth century, demonstrating the capacity of the medium to convey complex textures and spatial depth through monochromatic ink application.
