A detailed etching by Felix Meyer depicting a rugged mountain stream and rocky terrain, executed with precise line work.
This etching by Felix Meyer presents a rugged, mountainous scene defined by the interplay of rock formations and flowing water. Meyer, a Swiss painter and etcher active during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, frequently produced works that focused on the dramatic qualities of the natural world. His approach to the medium relies on precise, controlled lines to define the textures of stone, foliage, and the movement of the stream.
The composition is structured around a central watercourse that descends over small rocky ledges. To the left, a steep, craggy bank rises, covered in sparse vegetation and gnarled trees. To the right, a more substantial rock face provides a frame for the scene, with roots and branches clinging to the surface. The background recedes into a series of rolling hills, rendered with lighter, finer hatching to suggest atmospheric distance.
Meyer’s technique demonstrates the conventions of the period, where the artist prioritised the clarity of form and the structural integrity of the environment. The use of cross-hatching and varied line weight creates a sense of volume within the rocks and depth across the terrain. Unlike the more idealised or pastoral scenes common in the era, this work leans into the raw, unrefined character of the terrain. The absence of human figures allows the viewer to focus entirely on the geological and botanical elements of the composition. This print serves as an example of the graphic output of the Swiss school, which often explored the mountainous topography of the region through the medium of printmaking. The work remains a study in the application of line to capture the rugged textures of the natural world, maintaining a balance between observation and stylistic convention.
