A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Pieter Nagel depicting Saint Jerome in his study, surrounded by scholarly attributes and his traditional lion.
This engraving by Pieter Nagel depicts Saint Jerome, a Church Father, within the traditional setting of his study. The composition follows a long-established iconographic tradition, presenting the saint as a scholar engaged in the translation of the Bible. Jerome is shown seated at a desk, quill in hand, surrounded by the tools of his intellectual labour: open manuscripts, an hourglass, and a skull, which serves as a memento mori. The presence of the lion, his traditional attribute, resting at his feet, reinforces the identity of the figure.
Nagel employs a precise, linear technique characteristic of late sixteenth-century Dutch printmaking. The architectural space is constructed with a clear perspective, leading the eye from the foreground desk to the window, which offers a glimpse of a distant, rugged exterior. The interior is filled with objects that suggest a life of asceticism and academic rigour. The drapery of Jerome's robes is rendered with controlled, rhythmic lines that define the volume of his form against the backdrop of the study. The inclusion of a crucifix and various religious texts emphasises the spiritual nature of his work.
This print reflects the Northern Mannerist interest in detailed, descriptive realism combined with symbolic narrative. The work was published by Gerard de Jode, a prominent figure in the Antwerp print trade during this period. The Latin inscription at the base identifies the subject and provides historical context, typical of the scholarly nature of such engravings. The print demonstrates the technical skill required to balance the busy, object-heavy composition with the central figure of the saint. It remains a fine example of the period's approach to religious subject matter, where the domestic environment of the study becomes a space for theological contemplation.
