A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, featuring Mount Fuji and travellers at the Kanaya station on the Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts the station of Kanaya, a stop on the Tokaido road connecting Edo and Kyoto. The composition features Mount Fuji as a dominant presence in the upper register, rendered with clean lines and a stylised green tone. Hokusai employs a flattened perspective, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where the mountain, the rolling hills, and the travellers are arranged to balance the visual weight of the scene.
The foreground shows figures navigating the terrain, carrying goods in baskets. Their presence provides a sense of scale against the natural features. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft pinks for the clouds, muted greens for the hills, and earthy tones for the ground. The print demonstrates Hokusai's ability to simplify complex natural forms into clear, graphic elements. The use of negative space, particularly in the sky and the water, allows the eye to move across the print without distraction.
Unlike the later, more famous series by Utagawa Hiroshige, Hokusai's interpretation of the Tokaido stations often focuses on a more decorative and schematic approach. The print reflects the technical precision of the Edo period woodblock printing process, where each colour required a separate carved block. The registration of these blocks is precise, maintaining the clarity of the outlines. This work offers a view into the travel culture of nineteenth-century Japan, capturing the rhythm of movement along the coastal route. It remains a clear example of Hokusai's early mastery of composition and his ability to integrate human activity into the natural world through a graphic, rather than realistic, lens.
