A woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting travellers resting at a teahouse in Kameyama, from his series on the Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts a scene at Kameyama, one of the stops along the Tokaido road. The composition focuses on a roadside teahouse where travellers pause during their journey. A central male figure sits upon a raised wooden platform, while a woman serves him tea. To the left, a second man rests near his luggage, suggesting the weariness of long-distance travel. The background features a winding river and simplified natural forms, characteristic of Hokusai's approach to spatial arrangement in his earlier print series.
Hokusai produced this series during the Edo period, a time when travel along the Tokaido route between Edo and Kyoto became increasingly popular among commoners. Unlike the later, more famous series by Utagawa Hiroshige, Hokusai's interpretation of the Tokaido stations often emphasises the human element and the daily activities of those traversing the route. The print employs a limited colour palette, typical of early nineteenth-century woodblock printing techniques. The lines are clean and precise, defining the architecture of the teahouse and the folds of the figures' garments with clarity.
The print serves as a record of historical travel culture in Japan. It captures a quiet moment of respite, contrasting the stillness of the teahouse with the implied movement of the road. The use of negative space and the balanced placement of the figures demonstrate Hokusai's mastery of composition before he achieved his later fame with the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. This work provides an insight into the aesthetic conventions of the Ukiyo-e school, where the focus remained on the observation of contemporary life and the documentation of regional travel.
