A 1528 engraving by Jakob Binck depicting the biblical figure of Judith, rendered with the precise line work characteristic of the German Little Masters.
This engraving by Jakob Binck, dated 1528, depicts the biblical figure of Judith. Binck, a German artist associated with the Little Masters, demonstrates his technical proficiency in the medium of copperplate engraving. The composition focuses on the half-length figure of Judith, who holds the severed head of Holofernes in her right hand while gripping a sword in her left. Her attire is characteristic of the early sixteenth-century German fashion, featuring voluminous sleeves, a decorative bodice, and a structured headpiece.
Binck employs a system of fine hatching and cross-hatching to define the forms and textures of the clothing, the metallic sheen of the blade, and the facial features of the subject. The background is rendered with a dense, uniform cross-hatched pattern, which creates a dark field that pushes the figure forward. A small architectural detail appears in the upper right corner, providing a sense of spatial context. The artist's monogram, ICB, is visible in the upper left, accompanied by the date.
As a member of the group known as the Little Masters, Binck produced small-scale prints that were intended for collectors and connoisseurs. These works often explored classical, mythological, or biblical themes, reflecting the humanist interests of the period. The treatment of the subject is direct and focused, prioritising the narrative elements of the story through precise line work. The print captures the tension of the moment, with Judith looking away from her grim task, her expression composed. The attention to detail in the fabric folds and the rendering of the hair demonstrates the meticulous approach common to printmakers of the German Renaissance. This work remains a clear example of the technical standards achieved by Binck during his career in Northern Europe.
