A detailed nineteenth-century engraving by John Henry Robinson, depicting the Earl and Countess of Derby with their child in a formal portrait composition.
This fine engraving by John Henry Robinson depicts James Stanley, the seventh Earl of Derby, alongside his wife, Charlotte de La Tremouille, and their child. The composition is based on the seventeenth-century portraiture style, capturing the aristocratic bearing of the subjects through precise line work and tonal modulation. Robinson, a skilled engraver of the nineteenth century, demonstrates his technical proficiency in the rendering of fabric textures, from the heavy folds of the Earl's cloak to the delicate sheen of the Countess's gown.
The figures are positioned within a formal setting that balances interior and exterior elements. A heavy curtain hangs to the right, providing a sense of domestic enclosure, while the left side opens into a wooded area. This juxtaposition was a common convention in portraiture of the period, intended to convey both the public status and private life of the sitters. The inclusion of the child at the centre of the composition creates a balanced arrangement, drawing the eye across the group.
Robinson's work is characterised by a disciplined approach to the burin, creating subtle gradations of light and shadow that define the forms without relying on excessive ornamentation. The engraving captures the historical gravity associated with the Earl and Countess, who were figures of note during the English Civil War. By translating the original painted composition into the medium of engraving, Robinson allows for the wider dissemination of this historical image, maintaining the formal dignity of the original subjects. The print serves as a record of both the historical figures and the high standard of reproductive engraving practised in Britain during the nineteenth century.
