A woodblock print by Inoue Yasuji documenting the modern steel Azuma Bridge in Tokyo during the Meiji era.
This woodblock print by Inoue Yasuji depicts the Azuma Bridge in Tokyo shortly after its construction. As a student of Kobayashi Kiyochika, Yasuji adopted the Meiji-era fascination with Western-style architecture and urban modernisation. The bridge, a steel truss structure, dominates the composition, representing the rapid industrialisation of the capital during the late nineteenth century.
The scene captures a blend of traditional Japanese attire and Western fashion, reflecting the social shifts of the period. Figures in kimonos walk alongside men in frock coats and top hats, while horse-drawn carriages traverse the bridge. The inclusion of gas lamps and the rigid, geometric lines of the steelwork contrast with the more fluid, traditional depictions of nature found in earlier Ukiyo-e prints. Yasuji employs a muted palette, typical of the Meiji period, which allows the structural details of the bridge to remain the primary focus.
Technically, the print demonstrates the transition from traditional woodblock methods to a more observational, almost journalistic style. The perspective is deliberate, guiding the viewer across the bridge towards the distant cityscape. The sky is rendered with a subtle gradient, a technique often used to suggest atmospheric depth. This work serves as a visual record of Tokyo's changing infrastructure, documenting the arrival of modern engineering in a city that was rapidly redefining its identity. The print is a characteristic example of the 'Tokyo meisho' (Famous Places of Tokyo) series, which sought to document the new landmarks of a city in flux.
