Beschreibung
Hurst Castle in Hampshire guards the Solent from a narrow shingle spit, its low artillery walls setting a defensive landmark against open water and the Isle of Wight passage.
Built for Henry VIII between 1541 and 1544, Hurst Castle protected the Needles Passage at the western entrance to the Solent. The fort stands at the end of a long Hampshire shingle spit, guarding approaches towards Southampton and the naval base at Portsmouth.
Low pale fortifications stretch across the middle view beside bright blue water. A rounded stone building stands near the viewer, with dark shuttered openings and small structures on its roof. Sandy tracks cross green and gold grass towards the walls, and a little boat rests by the far bank. Strong sunlight and soft cream cloud give the exposed coastal scene a warm summer clarity.
