A classic vanitas allegory by Cornelis Ketel, depicting a putto blowing a bubble to represent the fragility of human life.
This circular painting, or tondo, by the Dutch Mannerist painter Cornelis Ketel, presents a classic vanitas motif. The central figure is a young child, depicted as a putto, engaged in the act of blowing a soap bubble. This imagery draws upon the Latin phrase 'Homo bulla', meaning 'man is a bubble', a common memento mori theme in European art during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. It serves as a reminder of the fragility and brevity of human life, comparing the ephemeral nature of a bubble to the fleeting existence of humanity.
Ketel, who spent significant time in England and France before returning to the Netherlands, demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of his period. The child is rendered with soft, rounded forms, set against a dark, atmospheric background that pushes the figure forward. The inclusion of Greek text along the upper edge of the tondo, 'POMPHOLYX O ANTHROPOS', reinforces the allegorical message, translating directly to 'Man is a bubble'.
The composition is contained within a circular frame, a format that was popular for allegorical and devotional works of the era. The lighting is focused on the child, creating a sense of volume and physical presence. The ground beneath the figure is sparsely detailed, ensuring that the viewer's attention remains fixed on the symbolic action of the putto. As a piece of Northern Mannerist art, the work balances naturalistic observation with a clear, didactic purpose. It avoids excessive ornamentation, relying instead on the strength of its philosophical message and the clarity of its execution. This print captures the nuanced tonal shifts of the original oil painting, preserving the sombre yet contemplative mood of Ketel's work for a contemporary setting.
