A 1912 etching by Anders Zorn, depicting a portrait of Gulli. This work demonstrates Zorn's mastery of line and light through expressive, directional hatching.
Anders Zorn, a Swedish artist of international standing, produced this etching in 1912. The work depicts Gulli, a recurring subject in his later graphic output. Zorn is recognised for his technical mastery of the etching medium, a skill he refined throughout his career. He often employed rapid, decisive lines to capture the essence of his sitters rather than focusing on minute, static detail.
In this portrait, the subject wears a traditional head covering, a common feature in Zorn's depictions of rural Swedish life. The composition relies on the contrast between the light on the sitter's face and the dense, directional hatching used to define the background and clothing. Zorn's ability to suggest volume and texture through varied line weight is evident here. The vertical strokes in the background create a sense of atmosphere, while the more fluid lines around the face and collar provide a softer, more naturalistic quality.
Zorn's approach to printmaking was unconventional for his time. He often left areas of the plate relatively open, allowing the paper to contribute to the overall luminosity of the image. This etching demonstrates his capacity to balance technical rigour with a sense of spontaneity. The sitter's direct gaze engages the viewer, providing a sense of immediacy that is characteristic of Zorn's portraiture. As a print, this work reflects the artist's interest in documenting the people of his native Dalarna, capturing both their individual features and the cultural context of the region. The signature at the bottom right confirms the artist's personal involvement in the printing process, a standard practice for his limited editions.
