Beschreibung
A dynamic lithograph by Sam Francis, featuring a peripheral arrangement of primary colours that frame a central void.
Sam Francis, a central figure in the development of post-war American abstraction, produced Green Ring in 1972. This work demonstrates his characteristic approach to the canvas, where the interaction between empty space and concentrated colour creates a sense of movement. Francis often allowed the white of the paper to function as an active element rather than a passive background, a technique he refined through his interest in Japanese aesthetics and the philosophy of space.
The composition is structured around a peripheral arrangement of marks. Splatters, drips, and washes of primary colours occupy the edges of the frame, leaving the centre largely unoccupied. This creates a tension between the density of the pigment and the void at the heart of the image. The application of paint varies from thin, translucent washes to thick, gestural deposits, reflecting the physical process of the artist at work. By focusing the visual energy on the perimeter, Francis directs the viewer to consider the relationship between the painted surface and the surrounding environment.
Francis spent significant time in Paris and Tokyo, and his work reflects a synthesis of Western gestural painting and Eastern calligraphic traditions. His use of colour is deliberate, with each hue maintaining its own clarity despite the chaotic appearance of the splatters. The lithographic process allows for a layering of these colours, resulting in a depth that is both physical and optical. This print captures the energy of his larger paintings while maintaining the precision required by the medium. It is a study in balance, where the apparent disorder of the paint application is contained within a rigorous structural framework. The work invites the viewer to observe the individual marks and the overall rhythm of the composition without the distraction of representational subject matter.
