A precise eighteenth-century architectural drawing by Antonina Houbraken, documenting the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis in Amsterdam.
This drawing by Antonina Houbraken depicts the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis, a historic hospital located on the Nieuwendijk in Amsterdam. Houbraken, the daughter of the biographer Arnold Houbraken, produced a series of topographical studies that document the urban fabric of the Netherlands during the early eighteenth century. Her work provides a clear, observational record of civic architecture, prioritising structural accuracy over atmospheric effect.
The composition is presented as a vignette, framed by a drawn border that mimics a piece of parchment or paper. The hospital complex is rendered with precise, thin ink lines, showing the characteristic stepped gables and modest masonry typical of Dutch institutional buildings of the period. A light grey wash is applied to define the shadows and provide a sense of volume to the building facades, while the surrounding space remains largely unadorned. The inclusion of a handwritten caption at the base, identifying the location as the hospital near the Vrouwenkapelsteeg, aligns with the tradition of topographical documentation intended for archival or illustrative purposes.
As a practitioner of the period, Houbraken utilised a restrained palette and a disciplined hand to capture the specificities of the site. The drawing avoids the dramatic flourishes common in contemporary oil painting, focusing instead on the clarity of the architectural form. This piece offers a glimpse into the daily environment of Amsterdam before the extensive urban redevelopments of the later centuries. It is a quiet, methodical study that reflects the interest in local history and civic pride prevalent among Dutch artists of the time. The work remains a valuable reference for those interested in the history of Amsterdam and the development of topographical drawing techniques in the eighteenth century.
