A precise graphite drawing by Hugh William Williams, capturing the medieval Smeetoren in Utrecht during his 1818 tour of the Netherlands.
This graphite drawing by Hugh William Williams depicts the Smeetoren, a medieval defensive tower in Utrecht, as it appeared in the early nineteenth century. Williams, a Scottish artist known for his travels across Europe, produced this work during his tour of the Netherlands. The composition centres on the tower, which rises above a dense cluster of trees, while the spires of the city provide a secondary vertical rhythm in the background. In the foreground, a small boat rests on the water, and figures are positioned along the bank, providing a sense of scale to the urban architecture.
The drawing is executed with a light, precise hand, typical of the topographical studies produced by British artists during the Grand Tour era. Williams focuses on the structural clarity of the tower and the surrounding foliage, using minimal shading to define the forms. The paper tone remains visible throughout, serving as the mid-tone for the entire scene. This approach allows the viewer to observe the architectural details of the Smeetoren, including its distinct platform and crenellations, without the distraction of heavy tonal work.
Such drawings were often created as preparatory sketches for larger watercolours or as personal records of travel. The inscription at the bottom indicates the location and date, confirming the artist's presence in Utrecht in September 1818. The work captures a quiet, observational moment in a city that was undergoing gradual change. It offers a clear view of the Dutch urban environment before the industrial expansions of the later century. The simplicity of the line work reflects the artist's training and his ability to capture the essence of a location with economy and precision. This print preserves the delicate nature of the original graphite marks, making it a suitable addition for those interested in historical topography and the tradition of the travelling artist.
