A traditional Kalighat watercolour painting depicting the deity Ganesha, rendered with the bold lines and flat composition characteristic of nineteenth-century Indian folk art.
This work originates from the Kalighat school of painting, a style that emerged in nineteenth-century Kolkata. Artists produced these works for pilgrims visiting the Kalighat Kali Temple. The style is characterised by bold, sweeping brushstrokes and a simplified approach to form, which allowed for rapid production to meet the demands of the market.
The image depicts Ganesha, the deity associated with the removal of obstacles. He is shown in a seated position, his four arms holding symbolic items. The figure is rendered with a rounded, corporeal presence, typical of the Kalighat aesthetic. The artist uses a palette of earthy reds, muted greens, and soft yellows, applied with a fluid, watercolour technique. A halo surrounds the head of the deity, suggesting divinity through simple, radiating lines. Beneath the throne, the mouse, Ganesha's traditional vehicle, is depicted in a minimalist fashion.
These paintings were often executed on inexpensive paper, which accounts for the visible texture and ageing seen in the original. The composition is flat, prioritising clear, iconic representation over depth or perspective. The inclusion of handwritten text at the bottom is a common feature of Kalighat works, providing context for the subject matter. This piece offers a view into the intersection of traditional religious art and the urban culture of colonial-era India. It remains a representative example of the folk-art tradition that flourished in the markets surrounding the temple, capturing a specific moment in the history of Indian visual culture.
