Published in 1811, this specific plate draws inspiration from Edmund Spenser's epic poem, The Faerie Queene. The scene depicts a solitary figure resting beside a fallen tree in a rugged, mountainous setting. The composition relies on the dramatic interplay of light and shadow, a hallmark of the mezzotint process employed here by engraver Thomas Hodgetts under Turner's direction.
