A monochromatic ink drawing by Boris Kustodiev depicting two figures returning from a fishing trip, accompanied by a grazing camel.
Boris Kustodiev, a painter and graphic artist, produced this ink drawing during a period when his health was in decline, forcing him to focus on smaller scale works. The composition depicts two figures returning from a fishing trip, carrying their rods and a catch. A camel grazes in the background, a detail that introduces an element of the unexpected into an otherwise mundane rural scene. Kustodiev often explored themes of Russian provincial life, blending observation with a degree of stylisation.
The drawing employs a confident, economic use of line. Kustodiev uses varying weights of ink to define the silhouettes of the men and the texture of the landscape. The hatching in the sky and ground provides a sense of atmosphere without cluttering the visual field. The figures are rendered with a focus on their posture and the weight of their equipment, conveying a sense of weary satisfaction after a day of activity. The presence of the camel suggests a specific geographical context, likely reflecting the artist's interest in the diverse regions of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union.
This work demonstrates Kustodiev's ability to capture narrative through minimal means. His graphic work often served as a counterpoint to his more colourful, large-scale oil paintings. By stripping away colour, he forces the viewer to engage with the structural integrity of the composition and the expressive quality of his mark-making. The print captures the original ink work with high fidelity, preserving the contrast between the dark, solid forms of the figures and the lighter, hatched background. It is an example of early twentieth-century Russian graphic art, showing the artist's transition from academic training to a more personal, illustrative style.
