A dynamic exploration of colour and rhythm, this Orphist painting captures the energy of a flamenco performance through geometric abstraction.
Sonia Delaunay, a central figure in the development of Orphism, applied her interest in colour theory and geometric abstraction to the human form in this work. The composition depicts a performer through a series of concentric circles and fragmented planes, reflecting her fascination with movement and light. By breaking down the figure into rhythmic shapes, she captures the energy of the performance rather than a literal representation of the subject.
During her time in Spain and Portugal, Delaunay explored the intersection of traditional folk culture and modern abstraction. The palette is saturated, utilising high-contrast tones to create a sense of optical vibration. The circular motifs, which appear throughout her body of work, function here as both decorative elements and structural devices that guide the eye across the canvas. The figure of the singer is integrated into this geometric field, suggesting a synthesis between the performer and the atmosphere of the music.
This piece demonstrates her approach to simultaneity, a concept she developed alongside her husband, Robert Delaunay. The technique relies on the juxtaposition of contrasting colours to generate a sense of depth and motion without traditional perspective. The result is a dynamic image that prioritises the sensory experience of the scene. Her work from this period remains a clear example of how early twentieth-century avant-garde artists sought to translate auditory experiences into visual form. The print captures the texture of the original brushwork, maintaining the intensity of the pigments used in the composition.
