A detailed etching documenting a revolutionary decorative structure in Amsterdam, 1795, featuring political iconography and allegorical scenes.
This etching by Noach van der Meer (II) documents a temporary decorative structure erected in the Beurssteeg of Amsterdam in 1795. Created during the period of the Batavian Revolution, the work captures the political atmosphere of the time, when the Dutch Republic transitioned into the Batavian Republic under French influence. The structure itself is adorned with revolutionary iconography, including the Phrygian cap, a symbol of liberty, and various allegorical figures representing the alliance between the Dutch and French republics.
The composition is divided into distinct sections. The upper portion features two oval medallions inscribed with slogans in both Dutch and French, celebrating the union of the two republics. Below these, two framed panels depict allegorical scenes of political unity and civic virtue. The central text identifies the structure as a site for the assembly of deputies from the Batavian clubs and patriotic societies. At the base, figures in contemporary eighteenth-century dress observe the installation, providing a sense of scale and context for the public nature of these revolutionary displays.
Van der Meer employs a clean, linear style characteristic of late eighteenth-century Dutch printmaking. The use of hand-colouring adds a subtle warmth to the architectural elements and the figures, while the overall arrangement remains structured and formal. This print functions as a historical record of the ephemeral architecture that populated urban spaces during times of political upheaval. It offers a glimpse into how revolutionary ideals were communicated to the public through visual displays in the streets of Amsterdam. The work remains a valuable document for those interested in the intersection of graphic art and political history during the late Enlightenment.
