A 1943 figurative study by Le Corbusier, featuring bold geometric lines and a muted, earthy palette.
Le Corbusier, primarily known for his architectural contributions, maintained a rigorous practice in painting and drawing throughout his career. This work, titled Divinité baroque, dates to 1943. It displays the characteristic formal language he developed during his later period, where the human figure is subjected to geometric reduction and rhythmic distortion. The composition relies on a series of bold, black outlines that define the anatomical structure while simultaneously flattening the pictorial space.
The figure is rendered with a sense of deliberate awkwardness, a common trait in his figurative studies of the 1940s. The use of colour is restrained, employing a palette of earthy browns, muted blues, and touches of green and violet. These hues are applied in flat planes, often leaving the raw tone of the paper visible as a structural element. The cross-hatching visible in the shaded areas provides a tactile quality, reminiscent of his training in the decorative arts and his early exposure to architectural drafting.
Unlike his earlier Purist works, which favoured machine-age precision and clarity, this piece leans into a more organic, almost totemic representation of the body. The title itself suggests an interest in the monumental or the mythic, qualities he often sought to integrate into his architectural projects. The figure appears to occupy a shallow, stage-like environment, where the background elements serve to frame the subject rather than provide a realistic setting. This print captures the graphic strength of the original, preserving the interplay between the heavy contours and the subtle, layered application of pigment. It is a clear example of how the artist translated his spatial theories into the two-dimensional realm, prioritising structural integrity over naturalistic representation.
