The composition focuses on the dramatic tension between the Egyptian queen and the Roman leader, who sits at his desk in the background, seemingly unaware of the unfolding spectacle.

Gérôme was known for his precise technique and his interest in archaeological accuracy, which he combined with theatrical staging.
