A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Frans Ertinger depicting the return of Briseis to Achilles, framed by classical architectural motifs.
This etching by Frans Ertinger depicts the moment Briseis is returned to Achilles, a narrative drawn from Homer's Iliad. Ertinger, a Flemish printmaker active in the late seventeenth century, demonstrates a command of line and shadow characteristic of the period. The composition is framed by architectural elements, including herms and cornucopiae, which provide a theatrical structure to the scene.
At the centre, Briseis stands as the focus of the interaction, surrounded by figures who facilitate her return. Achilles gestures towards her, his posture conveying authority and resolution. The background includes the masts of ships, grounding the narrative in the context of the Trojan War. Ertinger employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the musculature of the figures and the folds of their classical drapery. The presence of putti at the top of the frame adds a decorative layer, typical of Baroque printmaking, which often sought to elevate historical subjects through elaborate ornamentation.
Ertinger's work often involved the reproduction of paintings by other masters, and this print reflects the conventions of seventeenth-century reproductive engraving. The attention to detail in the foreground, from the vessels being handled by the kneeling figures to the horses waiting at the right, creates a sense of activity. The print captures the tension of the Homeric narrative while adhering to the formal requirements of the time, balancing human drama with a structured, decorative environment. This piece offers a glimpse into the way classical literature was visualised and disseminated through print culture in Europe during the late seventeenth century.
