A refined Japanese surimono print featuring a decorative box and open books, accompanied by elegant calligraphy.
This surimono print by Uematsu Tōshū presents a refined composition typical of the private, commissioned works popular among Japanese literary circles during the Edo period. Surimono were produced for small groups of poets and connoisseurs, often featuring a combination of visual imagery and kyōka, or comic verse.
The central subject is a small, decorative box, rendered with a rounded lid that features a phoenix motif amidst stylised clouds. The side of the box reveals a miniature interior scene, depicting figures in a domestic setting, which suggests a narrative or poetic reference. Beside the box lie open books, their pages marked with text, reinforcing the intellectual and literary themes that define this genre of print. The inclusion of calligraphy to the left of the objects balances the composition, integrating the written word with the visual elements.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft blues, muted reds, and earthy tones, which is characteristic of the high-quality printing techniques employed for surimono. The lines are fine and precise, capturing the texture of the paper and the delicate patterns on the box. This work reflects the cultural preoccupation with refined leisure, scholarship, and the appreciation of small, crafted objects. The juxtaposition of the physical object and the poetic text invites the viewer to consider the relationship between material culture and literary expression. As a piece of ephemera, it offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the period, where the design of everyday items was elevated through artistic representation and poetic association.
