A Symbolist work by Frantisek Kupka, depicting three figures bathed in dappled light beneath a fruit tree, rendered with Neo-Impressionist colour techniques.
Frantisek Kupka, a Czech artist who spent much of his career in Paris, painted Autumn Sun, Three Goddesses during a period of transition in his practice. Before his move toward complete abstraction, Kupka explored the human form through the lens of Symbolism and Neo-Impressionist colour theory. This work depicts three female figures standing beneath a canopy of fruit-laden branches. The composition draws upon classical motifs, yet the application of paint suggests a modern interest in the effects of light on skin.
The figures are rendered with a distinct palette, where shadows are composed of cool greens and blues, contrasting with the warm, sun-drenched highlights on the skin. This technique creates a sense of volume and atmosphere, grounding the figures within their environment. The background is dark, which pushes the illuminated bodies forward, creating a clear separation between the subjects and the surrounding space. The fruit hanging above the figures adds a decorative element to the upper portion of the canvas, balancing the weight of the figures below.
Kupka was interested in theosophy and the spiritual dimensions of art, which often informed his choice of subjects. While the title references goddesses, the treatment of the figures is grounded in physical reality, showing the artist's ability to blend classical themes with his own experimental approach to colour. The brushwork is deliberate, building up the forms through small, rhythmic strokes that capture the dappled light filtering through the trees. This piece provides a view into the artist's early twentieth-century output, showing his technical skill before he shifted his focus to the non-representational works for which he is often associated.
