An 18th-century Dutch etching depicting the god Apollo distributing songs to figures at a fairground, dated 1742.
This etching by Jan van den Bergh, dated 1742, serves as an allegorical frontispiece or illustration for a literary work titled 'Apollos Kermis-gift'. The composition is divided into two distinct realms: the celestial and the terrestrial. In the upper portion, Apollo sits amidst clouds, surrounded by a radiant halo. He is accompanied by a winged figure, likely a muse or Fame, who plays a trumpet. Apollo is depicted in the act of casting down sheets of paper, which represent songs or poems, towards the figures below.
The lower portion of the print depicts a lively fairground scene, or 'kermis'. Various figures in eighteenth-century Dutch attire occupy the space. A wooden stage is visible, upon which individuals perform, while others gather on the ground to collect the papers descending from the heavens. The scene captures a blend of mythological intervention and everyday life, a common trope in the literature and print culture of the period. The artist employs fine, hatched lines to create texture in the clouds and the clothing of the figures, providing a sense of depth despite the crowded arrangement of the scene.
Jan van den Bergh, active in the mid-eighteenth century, produced works that often functioned as book illustrations. This particular print demonstrates the technical precision required for such small-scale engravings. The inclusion of the title 'APOLLOS KERMIS-GIFT. II DEEL.' at the base confirms its role as a secondary volume illustration. The contrast between the divine, light-filled upper register and the busy, shadowed fairground below creates a narrative tension, suggesting that the inspiration for the songs originates from a higher source, yet finds its audience among the common people at the fair.
