Anders Zorn, a Swedish artist known for his technical mastery of the etching medium, produced this portrait of the French journalist and politician Antonin Proust in 1889. The work demonstrates Zorn's ability to capture a subject through rapid, decisive lines and a sophisticated understanding of light and shadow.
In this composition, Proust is depicted in a relaxed, contemplative pose. Zorn employs a series of directional hatch marks to define the form of the sitter and the surrounding space. The background is rendered with dense, dark strokes that push the figure forward, creating a sense of immediate presence. The light source appears to come from the left, illuminating the side of Proust's face and his hand, while leaving other areas in deep shadow.
Zorn's approach to etching was unconventional for the period. Rather than relying on slow, methodical cross-hatching, he utilised a more fluid, painterly technique. Anders Zorn
Zorn painted three sitting American presidents: Grover Cleveland, William Howard Taft and Theodore Roosevelt. For a Swedish painter from a small town in Dalarna, the commissions represented an extraordinary international reach, built on a reputation as one of the finest portrait painters and etchers of his generation.
He was born in Mora in 1860, studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm, and worked across Paris, London and the United States. His ability to render water and flesh with loose, confident brushwork set him apart from more academic contemporaries. His etchings, numbering roughly three hundred, are considered among the finest of the period.
He returned to Mora later in life, establishing a museum and open-air museum there. The Zorn Museum remains a major cultural institution in Sweden. He died in Mora in 1920, at sixty.
